Confusing Covers {1}

3.18.2012
We've all seen those covers where we go, "Oh, that's pretty! But . . . what is it?" So I just decided I'd show a few of those covers that have made me do that today. (Because I have nothing better to do. It's Sunday. That's my excuse.) I'll probably do this once every other week as I find more.

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected publication: November 6th 2012 by Spencer Hill Press

Sam from Realm of Fiction was saying on Twitter that she thought this might be the back of a girl's neck. I always knew there was a flower, but I never had any idea about what was in the corner. I guess now I can see that it's a neck . . . A neck with a weird curve . . .  ?

Mirage by Kristi Cook
Expected publication: June 5th 2012 by Simon Pulse

Okay, so I understand that this is a butterfly and a broken mirror, but you have no idea how long it took me to figure that out. I always thought it was supposed to be a compass or something. <_<

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

I'm sure you'll all think I'm incredibly stupid for this one, but I took way too long to realize that there are two people on the cover. I was always just looking at the pink/purple sky thing between them, and for some reason it just took forever for it to register that, HEY, LOOK. FACES.

So what about you? What covers are you confused by? (And am I really the only one that didn't understand the AtU cover? >_>)

  1. I'm pretty sure it's a neck... I think. :P Though it does look less like a neck the longer I stare at it. AtU's cover - I can understand the confusion as it took me a few seconds longer than it should have to see the faces too. But the Mirage cover? How could you NOT see that? :D

  2. Maybe it's the top of an arm, like with a slight neck and shoulder thing and the black streak is a tank top strap?

  3. Okay, so I totally get Deity. That one's confusing as hell, although I agree with Sam--it seems to be the back of her neck. But . . . Mirage and AtU? xD I think that's just you, Unicorn.

  4. That top one...hmmm..maybe it's like a collar bone with a shoulder and an arm on the side and that black is hair handing kind of down and into the armpit? lol This should not be so hard!

  5. I didn't see the faces on the AtU cover at first either, because I was looking at a thumbnail on my library's website. I only saw the pinkish, starry hourglass. I liked it much more once I saw the faces. :-)

  6. Lexie: I said in the post they were ones that made ME confused. :P

  7. OMG I NEVER GOT ATU UNTIL THIS MOMENT!!

I've always focused on the pink/purple parts of it. Seriously ... never saw the faces. Even now, I have to struggle with focusing my eyes to see them!

  8. Oh my gosh I'm so glad I'm not the only person who missed the faces on ATU. I figured it out when I was like halfway through the book.

I have no clue what's going on with Deity. At all.

    LOL thanks for sharing!

  9. Wow...those really are confusing. And don't feel bad because I didn't get AtU at first either :P

  10. I'm thinking Deity has to be a shoulder, and that the darker bit is hair. But you're so right - very confusing!

Can't say I didn't see the faces on ATU or the broken mirror on Mirage though :P

    I like this idea!

  11. Don't feel bad, I did not see the faces until you just told me there were faces. How horrible of me. Well, thank you for pointing that out because I don't know if I would have ever paid close enough attention to see that. LOL

  12. It looks more like a shoulder on Deity. I always have to look at Across the Universe for a minute or two before I figure out what it really is. EVERY time. No jokes!

  13. I always thought Across the Universe was a hourglass. When I realized it was actually two faces, I was like O______O

  14. I never realised Across the Universe was two faces until I held it in my hands and stared. AND THEN REALISATION CAME.

  15. Oh thank goodness I am not the only one who didn't see the two people on across the universe!! Also never saw the whole corner thing on dirty until now!! Do this again please!!!

  16. ASDFJLKJ I DIDN'T GET THE ACROSS THE UNIVERSE THING EITHER!
Deity - I think it's someone's shoulder, and the black thing's their sleeve. Maybe? O__o

  17. HAHA, oh man. Don't feel bad. It took me ages too to finally figure out there were two faces on the cover and not some weird blackish design.

I'm thinking the first cover might be of an arm? It definitely looks like some sort of body part. Definitely strange though.

  18. The cover of Deity confused me at first until I realized it's the back of her neck and her hair is pulled off to the side and her head is tipped down a bit. Now it makes sense.

  19. Great post idea! I definitely don't know what the Deity cover is; then again I haven't read the series to be able to pick out any symbols from it either. I read Haven by Kristi Cook but I don't know what the symbolism is for Mirage either; lol and I agree it does look like a compass or something! As for the AtU cover; I can easily see your confusion! Even when I look at it, I still focus on the pink as well; missing the faces even though I do know that they are there, lol

  20. It took me FOREVER to understand the Across the Universe cover. I always saw two blobs then one day I walked by in it a book store and was like OMG that's two people almost kissing! lol
I still don't think I understand that Deity cover.

  21. @ Deity's cover
I had the same problem. I stared at it for ages and I even thought it was someone's shoulder...until someone mentioned it was a neck. =.=

Across the Universe took a few looks to figure out but sometimes it still doesn't look like two faces. It can work as some sort of optical illusion too! xD

  22. Deity is one confusing cover! Not too pretty either :(

When I read your post and it said that there were two faces in Across the Universe I FREAKED OUT. HAHA. I had NEVER seen it - I thought it was always swirly sparkly blobs floating in space. Thanks for clearing that up for me, haha!

Love this feature and can't wait to see more :)
